Life: Self-esteem

QUESTION POSTED BY AMARINDER ARORA

We all face problems of self-esteem at certain times in our life. Isn’t it? We feel inferior to a lot of people around us and it bothers us. We curse ourselves for no reason and in the process, some people even end up harming themselves.
The ultimate goal of the self is to protect an image of its self-integrity, morality and adequacy. Right? But at what cause?
We start with being honest to ourselves and align to our own values, morals and ethics. More often than not, in the name of these morals and values which we set for our good, bind us and restrict us. So, we end up crying because the instilled values won’t let us be rude to anyone and hurt them. Holy mother of god.

Is it morally correct? Let’s talk, we must.

Life: Why?

QUESTION POSTED BY MARTY PARRILL

As humans we desire to have so many personal things, such as a great job, big house, fancy car, money, a tremendous marriage, power, esteem, etc. Humans who possess these things, regularly commit suicide. I look at a individual like Mother Theresa who has none of these material things but seems to have such a depth of compassion, purpose or bliss.

Please explain why this can be reality?

Society: Do you ever wonder what you are doing wrong?‏

QUESTION POSTED BY MARIAM ASHRAF

I’ll start by saying that I am a confident, single 30-something female.  I have a supportive family, great career, enough income to be comfortable and I am told that I’m attractive. I’m quite social and I feel very content with my life at this point.

BUT sometimes I truly think that something is wrong with me.  I can’t explain it.  It comes on suddenly… some mornings I’ll just wake up and start to think the most unreasonable thoughts.  Or are they?  Why don’t I get along with my in-laws?  That is normal, isn’t it?  Or am I just a difficult person?  I like to think that I’m logical, reasonable, fair and empathetic.  But I often lose touch with old friends.  I’ve had some friendships fall apart in a heartbreaking way.  I’ve had many painful breakups.  I have had fights with my family members, conflicts with co-workers, falling outs… etc.  Is something fundamentally wrong with me?                                                                                                                                                    I actually think that many people have a touch of bipolar mood swings.  If you let your mind run and if you are concerned with what others think, you may have mornings (well, for me it is usually in the morning) where you inexplicably feel down and unsatisfied with yourself.  Then other mornings you feel on top of the world, also for no good reason.  I now choose to get off the roller coaster of my up-and-down emotions when this happens and get dressed, get out of the house, interact with people and convince myself once again that I’m only human and this is a part of human nature.  It is not a daily event but I think the key is to recognize when your feelings and thoughts are getting out of hand, especially when they lead you to wonder too much about yourself and what you are constantly doing wrong in life.  I think the “happiest” (read: most truly calm, satisfied and content) people in the world are those who spend less time thinking about themselves and more time just focusing on the day-to-day, observing these mood swings and simply letting them pass through without too much regard.

Do you ever feel this way?

Do you agree that it’s a part of humanity and we should choose to not get caught on the ride of our thoughts and feelings?

Is it healthy to detach yourself from these self-destruct thoughts or should we instead contemplate them for self-examination and eventual growth?

Science: Reflection

QUESTION POSTED BY AAKSHI AGARWAL

When looking in the mirror, you are scientifically proven to be 40% more attractive. If another human being and you are standing some distance apart and see each other in the mirror, do you view the other person as 40% more attractive, see them as you regularly see them, or is there a different percentage? Your are 40% more attractive based on the reflection of light from your pupil to the top of the mirror, to the bottom, and back to the center.

Does this mean their pupil will follow your pattern and add an extra step which would multiply your attractiveness?

Society: New scenario?

QUESTION POSTED BY RICHARD WILLIAM POSNER

Looking at the actions and attitude of the human race in general and the ruling class in particular, it would seem we believe ourselves so exceptional that we don’t need the rest of Life on the planet for our survival.

Many apparently believe that our technology will enable us to prevail no matter what.

Think of Earth turned into a self-sustaining technological environment, something like a planet-sized version of the starship Enterprise complete with those wonderful “replicators” which can produce whatever is needed out of thin air.

Imagine that the human species is the only Life left on the planet, that all other species of flora and fauna have been driven into extinction by our destructive exploitation of Nature, but that we are still able to live in this artificial environment.

Can we live alone and like it?

Would this be an acceptable or even desirable scenario?
